Apple Varieties
We have over 30 different Apple Varieties grown on our Orchard. These are listed below in the order of their approximate harvesting date, with a little bit of information on how they taste.
Pristine
An early summer apple! Harvest is mid-July of a medium-to-large fruit with a sweet-tart taste and a crisp, breaking flesh. Fruit features canary-yellow skin with a slight pink blush. Excellent for cooking, sauce & eating fresh.
Zestar!
Available mid-August, the Zestar!™ apples have a sweet-tart taste with notes of brown sugar. They can be baked in pies, pastries, and served sliced with warm caramel or other dipping sauces.
Initial
A mid-season ripening apple (mid-late August) with very crisp texture, high sugar and low acid fruit.
Jonamac
Attractive, high-quality slightly sweeter McIntosh-type dessert apple that is medium in size with 90 percent dark red color. Fruit is firm and crisp, ripening late August.
Buckeye Gala
The Buckeye® Gala ripens late August and is crisp, fine-textured, juicy, and sweet, with just a little more tang than other varieties of Gala. It is an all-purpose dessert apple, good for fresh eating, for salads, and for applesauce. It is a great variety to add a sugary, fresh flavor to an apple juice blend.
Crimson Gala
Ripening in early September, the Crimson Gala is an intense-coloring strain of Gala. It exhibits similar size and flavor to other Gala apples, and is sweet and firm.
Brookfield Gala
The variety ripens in early September. It has similar taste and texture as the other Gala varieties.
LindaMac
Lindamac has a sweet white flesh with that great Mac crunch. It ripens early September.
Crimson Crisp
A firm, deep red-purple, and crunchy apple. Its crispy yellow flesh holds a sweet-tart flavor, making it a great fresh-eating apple as well as a good juice or cider variety.
Daybreak Fuji
Daybreak is one of many Fuji varieties, which are known for being crunchy and low in acid. This creates a mild and balanced, sweet-tart flavor with notes of honey and citrus.
Honey Crisp
These are widely grown around the world. People love the well-balanced sweet-tart taste, and explosively crisp, juicy texture. It ripens early-mid September.
Crimson Gold
A smaller apple with a firm textured flesh that has a sweet-tart flavor and well suited for fresh and cooked preparations.
September Wonder Fuji
Also goes by Jubilee. It is crisp, extremely juicy and predominantly sweet. They are a great snack apple, but also an excellent dessert apple and holds up well when cooked.
Liberty
A crunchy, mildly tart apple that is much like a version of McIntosh. Recommended usage includes fresh eating, cooking, and cider.
Smoothee
Smoothie Golden Delicious is a modern sport of the world famous ‘Golden Delicious’ apple. This variety is very sweet and juicy when fully ripe.
Golden Delicious
Golden Delicious apples are firm, crisp, and white-fleshed. These apples have a balanced sweet-tart aromatic flavor, which has been described as honeyed.
Snow Sweet
Medium apple with a sweet and slightly tart flavor. It is slow to oxidize making it’s snow white flesh great for fresh eating, salads or main dishes.
Ambrosia
In a perfectly ripe Ambrosia apple, you’ll taste floral notes similar to a wildflower honey. These apples are very low in acid. They won’t taste tart or tangy, just mellow and sweet.
Freedom
Good multi-use apple. Medium to large red fruit on almost invisible yellow skin. Crisp, juicy, sweet, good-tasting flesh. Subacid, sprightly flavor.
Jonagold
These are derived from Jonathan & Golden Delicious cultivars. They are super crisp, large, yellow/green apples with both the tartness of a Jonathan and the sweetness of a Golden Delicious.
Melrose
Official Ohio State apple. It is a large flattened fruit, with yellowish green skin with dark red streaks (& with russet spots.) Flavor is a juicy sweet-tartness that sharpens with age. Very good cooking and dessert qualities.
Nova Spy
The large fruits have a wonderful, tart-sweet, vanilla-like flavor and are excellent for fresh eating, pies and cider.
Candy Crisp
An incredibly juicy apple, and when compared to a Honeycrisp apple, a Candy Crisp is significantly sweeter but doesn't have the same bite you get out of a Honeycrisp.
Stark Braestar
A sweet-tart apple with rich overtones and crunchy. Many consider it to be one of the best fresh-eating apples.
Enterprise
It has a spicy flavor that pairs well with cinnamon and other warm flavors. The fruit's flavor improves with storage and becomes pleasantly tart.
Gold Rush
The last apple of the year to be harvested, Gold Rush are sweet-tart and have a very complex fruity flavor. They are a bit more tart when they are first harvested, but quickly develop an excellent and unique aromatic sweet flavor after several weeks of refrigeration.
